The Madison Jazz Society band will be performing their repertoire of standard jazz tunes at the Madison Antique Show and Sale on April 30th from 6-8 p.m. The show is being held in the auditorium of the Madison Square Center for the Arts at 2103 Main Street in Madison. Admission is $25.00/ person or $40.00/ couple. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Madison Central PTO and renovations to the auditorium of the Madison Square Center for the Arts.
Jimmy Turner, David Schommer and Alan Hoops performed at the Hearts of Madison in a benefit for the Hearts of Madison on October 6th. Patron’s heard a number of Jazz standards performed in a classical style, by Jimmy Turner and some straight ahead jazz in a guitar duet by Jimmy and Alan. David Schommer and Alan Hoops performed jazz and pop tunes on trumpet and guitar.

Wellsfest this year, 2012, featured a number of local Jazz groups, including The Barry Leach Band, Latinismo and Southern Comfort. The Barry Leach Band also featured Jesse Robinson on guitar and vocals.
At the October meeting of the Madison Jazz Society, Jimmy Turner, a local classical guitarist and educator, performed select jazz pieces and discussed the influence of classical music on jazz.
Guitarist Jimmy Turner has performed extensively across the South and Midwest. He has performed with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and Mississippi Opera, and is often heard on “Mississippi Concert Hall” on Public Radio of Mississippi (PRM). Mr. Turner is a native of Jackson, MS, where he maintains a private guitar studio and serves on the adjunct faculty Millsaps College. Currently, Mr. Turner also teaches music classes at the Madison Branch of Tulane University and a Guitar Workshop through the Millsaps College Summer Enrichment Program. He has also taught at Wesley College, mississippi College, Holmes Community College, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
He has been an adjudicator for the Mississippi Federation of Music Clubs and the American String Teachers Association. He has also performed with the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra and has been the guitarist for New Stage Theatre in Jackson since 2010. Mr. Turner received Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He has performed in master classes for Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Jorge Morel, and Adam Holzman.
A meeting will be held on Sunday, August 5th at 5pm to consider forming a Jazz Society, based in the City of Madison, whose purpose will be, to provide jazz listeners and musicians, a social forum for jazz performance, education and enjoyment. All interested parties are invited. The meeting will be held at the Corner Bakery Restaurant on Grandview Boulevard, in Madison.
